Anna Smajdor - Ethicist

Background and biography

I have been a lecturer in Ethics at the University of East Anglia since 2008. I am based in the Medical School, managing the provision of ethics teaching to undergraduates and postgraduates. My interest in Medical Ethics was developed while I was studying for my first degree in Philosophy, at Edinburgh University. After graduating I worked for a number of years as project manager for an IT company before deciding to return to academia, with an MSc in Medical Ethics from Imperial College, which I followed with a PhD.

My interest in ethics has also led me to become involved in a variety of non-academic activities. I have been vice chair of the Riverside Research Ethics Committee (West London REC 3) for a number of years. I have also been a member of clinical ethics committees in London and Norwich. Recently, I became an Independent Assessor for the Human Tissue Authority (this role involves interviewing people who want to donate one of their kidneys to a friend or relative).
